What is "Where to Mountain Bike in South East Queensland"?

It's a book of maps of places to ride your bike on singletrack, rail trails, multi-use trails and forest roads within an hour or two of Noosa, Brisbane or Southport. This is the Fourth Edition prepared by Gillian; it was previously published by Gap Creek Trails Alliance. First published in 2002, the book has sold many thousands of copies, generally through bike shops. You can take a look at your local library - almost every library service in the region has multiple copies for loan.

What does the book look like?

The book is 84 pages A4 wire-bound to lay flat so you can photocopy the page and take it with you. The back page opens out to show the legend. Apart from the guff at the front and the back, every page is packed with detailed full colour contour maps. It also contains lots of notes about hazards, recommended routes, suggested skill levels etc. Most areas also have a map telling you how to get there; some have a map and profile for a recommended loop. The book is ideal to browse at home or take in the car, but if you want to take it on the bike, you may need to get a proper MTBO map board - see below.

How much does the book cost?

We expect the book to retail for AUD $29.00 (including GST where relevant) whether you buy it from a bike or book shop or online from Organised Grime.

Can I stock the book in my shop / ice cream van / trail care shed?

Sure. Please Contact Gillian right away.

Where can I buy the book?

You can buy direct from us online or from a network of quality bike, map and book shops.

Which areas are in the book?

Take a look at the Locations Map or the Contents Page. We have included singletrack, fire roads, gentle rides, grunty rides, downhill, rail trails, skills areas - anywhere that's fun, or different, or suitable for anyone who rides a mountain bike.

For each the land manager or private owner has given us permission. Each is within a couple of hours drive from Noosa, Brisbane or Southport. Each is a great riding experience for one of our potential readers - be they skilled or newbies, fit or not.

Why isn't my favourite ride in the book?

  • Maybe we don't know about it - please drop us a line.
  • Maybe we are hoping to put it in the Fifth Edition.
  • Maybe we can't put it in the book because it's illegal or private - take a look at the Rejects List.

Can I use one of your maps for my event, on my website, in my book, to give to my customers, etc?

Sure! Contact Us with your idea. We are keen to use these maps for any reasonable purpose, and we may even be able to map a new area for you and to customise the map for your purposes.

How can I take the book with me on my ride?

A map is most useful when it is right there in front of you as you ride. To achieve this you need a Mountain Bike Orienteering map board. A map board attaches securely to your bars up and out of the way of your hands. It holds your map or book securely behind a sheet of robust plastic. The board rotates to allow you to orientate the map correctly relative to the ground. Yes, this is the way that orienteers use a map! Suitable A4 map boards have until now been impossible to find. But now A4 boards manufactured by AutoPilot are available at very reasonable prices from our friends at WildFire Sports in Brisbane.

When will the Fifth Edition be ready?

As of early 2013 we have sold about half of the print run of the Fourth Edition. Some of them are on shop shelves and we sold a heap in the first week so it should take another two years to sell the rest. We expect the Fifth Edition to be published in 2015. We have continued searching out and mapping new trails and all of the maps are available on the Additions Page.
